I am the happily divorced father of two daughters, 17 and 20. Lora, the 17 year old, lives with me and Susan, the older girl is away at university.
Raising two daughters on my own over the past ten years has not been an easy task. I have been Mother as well as Father to them. I explained to them about periods. I coped with the teen years adequately, including talking to them about condoms and sexually transmitted diseases. I coped with a smile when both girls walked in and showed me their red raw tattoos one Saturday afternoon. I smiled at the boyfriends and made sure they were a bit scared of me. Scared enough to be careful, anyway. Find STD help at http://www.std-testing.info.
I thought I had an excellent relationship with both of my daughters, until yesterday.
Lora came home from college more grumpy than usual, obviously stressed out, so I left the chocolate where she could find it. Even chocolate didn’t help, but over dinner she finally came out what the problem was. “I want a boob job for my 18th birthday.”
I was astounded. Lora is slimly built, but never in a million years would i have guessed that she was unhappy with her body. When I had got my breath back, I asked Lora why the sudden desire to have large breasts. It turned out that it was something she had wanted for the past five years. She had been hoping they would develop naturally, but at 18, was going to give up and help nature along.
I said I would have to look into the different options, and said I would think about it, as parents do.
Over the next few days I hopped from one Internet site to another, looked at pictures of boob jobs before and after and saved a lot of websites to a folder on the desktop for Lora to study.
I was worried, partly because my daughter had obviously been unhappy about her body for so long, without mentioning it, and partly because of what can go wrong with cosmetic surgery.
I sat with Lora at the computer and we studied the information and pictures together.
She had not really done much research into the details and was shocked by the scarring that often accompanies breast implantation. We talked about the dangers of leakage from silicone implants and looked at some grotesque photos of women to whom this had happened.
We decided immediately – no silicone.
That left three options:
1.Exercise to improve the tone of the muscles and tendons that support the breasts.
2.Medication, creams or tablets that claim to increase the size of the breasts.
3.Saline implants.
I have persuaded Lora to wait a while before committing to surgery, and she is trying a series of exercises and creams, to see what effect they have. I have more faith in the exercises than in any cream. We are going to talk about it again in 6 months time. I think this is the best solution in that it allows Lora time to reflect on the permanence of any surgical or medical procedure. Hopefully she will come to accept her body as it is, and to see that having small breasts has some advantages, but ultimately I will have to go with her considered opinion, but not yet.
